Thoughts from the garden
March marks Spring (March 20th officially). Spring brings new life. Here's what we're thinking while in our garden.
Start stocking up on antihistamines.
"He plants trees to benefit another generation." - Caecilius Statius
Gardening is delayed gratification. We plant now to reap later. But we can also learn to love the process of cultivation.
"A garden is always a series of losses set against a few triumphs, like life itself." - May Sarton
Even our backyard gardens fight an uphill battle against squirrels, bugs, and the neighborhood cat. We must celebrate every win, every seed that breaks through the soil into the light.

This is Sparta!
What do the greatest warriors, athletes, and humans do before testing their mettle? Read on for a roundup.
The Greek Freak(s)
Pre-battle, Spartans recited poems, completed various tasks, and practiced physical rituals such as athletic competitions, exercise, and training.
Eliud Kipchoge (The sub-2hr man)
Belief in oneself from the greatest marathoner the world has ever seen, Eliud Kipchoge.
"When I am on the starting line, my mind starts to think of what I have been doing for the last five months. I believe in my training. I treat myself as the best one on that line because my mind is telling me that I am the best and I believe in what I am doing in the last five months. I can run free. I can run free and that’s what actually has helped me to be successful.”

Life's tectonic shifts
Can we prepare for a major change?
+
How do we respond to life changes when our world is shifting beneath our feet?
The playbook
When time and predictability are on our side, we can take steps to set ourselves up for success through change.
Make a plan - Can we set a goal or desired outcome and then break it down into a series of smaller goals/tasks?
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best - Disappointment (or shock) is the space between expectation and reality. Can we prepare for various outcomes and how they align with expectations?
Gather the team - Who's in our corner? Do we have the right team or support system in place for the change ahead?
Control the controllables
When life presents a [metaphorical] earthquake. (Don't come to us Floridians for actual earthquake preparedness)
Accept it - Resist or deny quicksand and we'll find ourselves at the bottom of a hole. Acceptance is necessary and within our control.
Control the Controllable - Even when we have no power over our outcome, we control our outlook.
Practice Resilience - The common characteristic among those living over 90 is resilience. Not raw strength or exceptional genetics, but an ability to feel, fight and move forward.
