Daycare Diaries
I was pumped to start last week. I set ambitious goals. I had a plan to complete them all. I was ready to work and train effectively.
Then daycare happened…
*Cue cold season*
Soon after arriving through the bacteria-lined doors, I let a cold get past my defenses and infiltrate my system.
Reacting to change
Much of early parenting has been reacting to change. Daycare (and the associated cold & flu season) is just another example. That’s why a newborn’s age is counted in weeks. Change is happening that quickly. It forces you to be ever-changing as a parent.
Back to the cold
Yes, I didn’t enjoy being sick last week. But, I had a harder time accepting the reality of my new workweek. I had to ‘ease’ off the gas a bit. I exercised less in favor of rest.
What’s my lesson — Plans change. We control how we react & adapt.
And “Slow is Smooth”. Reacting to being sick or overwhelmed could mean bringing down the intensity to 85% instead of 100%. (Credit to Ben Meer).
Good luck out there this week and please forward to whoever needs to hear this.

The “Planning Funnel”
That’s a wrap for Accountability January.
Next month we enter the “Planning Funnel”. I’ll break down my planning process from long-term to daily planning.
Where do you struggle with planning? Let me know in the comments!
Until then — How about a look back at ColdShower #39, a lesson from a time I let spontaneity take the wheel?
Rethink
Pure darkness
Rethink: What can 3 days in complete darkness teach you?
Maybe you’ve never asked that question. I haven’t. I have experienced total darkness in a cave, however, and was intrigued when I came across Kevin Kaiser’s latest newsletter - I Spent 3 Days in Total Darkness. Nothing Happened and It Was Profound.
Give it a read. While I’m no stranger to pushing myself beyond my comfort zone (i.e. 100-mile runs), I found Kevin’s takeaways full of insight we can bring to our own lives.
Still On The Toilet?
p.s. two weeks ago I published a newsletter without proofreading with lots of errors. I am sorry for this oversight and am in the process of putting a better proofreading system in place so that won’t happen again.
Thank you!!!

Thanks for sharing my essay. I'm so glad it sparked some insights for you.
WoW! I rather be in the light but still take time to smell the roses :) My planning struggles are always too much plan with not enough time or if I want to be truthful it can be too much procrastination becuase I'm smelling too many roses!
