Post-race blues
This past week I woke up early, poured some coffee, and took a ride to Orlando Orthopedic Center’s walk-up clinic.
It’s been a weird week. I’ve been mostly idle. I’m working out less (and with less intensity), and haven’t run in over 10 days. I don’t like the feeling. And inevitably I’m in my head more. But periods of rest & recovery are part of the deal when racing long endurance events. Post-race blues are a common (if not commonly talked about) occurrence.
Please check all boxes that apply
While filling out dreaded form after form, I was hit with a bit of perspective. “I’m able to check NA for past medical conditions.” I full sheet of “No’s” has always been how I’ve answered these forms.
And while I keep myself healthy, it’s also luck of the draw. I’ve been blessed thus far with good health. But I couldn’t answer the same way for our son, Miles, who while healthy now, has already had his share of surgeries and a full rap sheet of past medical conditions.
Health is everything
That goes without saying. It’s most powerful to change your perspective. If you’re in good health, be grateful. Reach out to others who are struggling. Our care and presence can change outcomes.
Take care of yourselves.

Making a list, checking it twice
Warren Buffet once gave (now famous) advice to his pilot on a routine trip. When speaking with his pilot about his greater goals and ambitions, Buffet laid out a 3-step formula for success.
1. Make a list
Choose an area of focus in your life. Then brainstorm. Write down 25 goals that will help you get to success.
2. Pick your top five
Now circle your top five. That’s your list.
3. Avoid the rest
Throw away the other 20. Those are your distractions.
If you’re like me, and while reading this you’re having flashbacks of past New Year’s resolution lists left unfinished, perhaps it’s time to give Buffet’s advice a shot.
Rethink
Let’s settle this
Rethink: What is natural-born talent?
I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. Why are some people good at things and not others? Are we born with gifts or are our talents simply a result of hard work and practice?
Nature vs. Nurture
It’s a split camp. Studies point to both directions. In 2016, Anders Ericcson and Robert Pool published Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise. They argue natural born talents do not exist and lay out a blueprint for developing excellence in any domain.
What do I do with this?
My take, who cares? Whether we’re born with a gift or it was shaped through circumstance and experience, it’s still up to us to decide how to use it.
The more interesting question is why we like what we like, and how we can use our passions and interests to develop our skills.
That’s it! Check out the links below for more on this.

THANK YOU for making it to the end! Now get outta here!
Speaking of health and talents/calling makes me think of - Florence Nigtingale - who pursued what she saw as her God-given calling of nursing and said her success was due to not taking or giving -Excuses.
