Forging our own path to fulfillment
Last week we talked about how our sense of meaning and our work are interconnected. And for the vast majority of us, we’re working normal jobs which makes finding meaning challenging.
I don’t think I did this topic justice so let’s expand upon the ways we can gain fulfillment in our jobs and careers.
Finding “it”
Reflecting on work: We all do work that affects others in some way. We don’t have to be saving endangered species (I’m looking at you Sea Otter) for our work to be meaningful. All of us within every company do work that affects others.
Meaningful growth: Our jobs don’t have to be a pure exchange of money & time. We’re learning and crafting our skills in each role. We can focus on projects that excite us, new skills we’ll learn, and even flex our creative muscles.
Be a part of a team: There’s a difference between being on a team and being a part of a team. Helping others is like a never-ending cup of fulfillment. We can take the load off a team member, collaborate and exchange valuable ideas, and mentor younger colleagues looking to find their way.
Funding a lifestyle: Many of us may sit in this camp. It’s my stance that we all need this to some degree, and a life pursued solely for work, however meaningful, is a recipe for burnout. Funding purposes outside of work could mean many things. It could be raising a family, getting involved with local community, or exploring personal passions and pursuits.

“Silent Walking”
Week 2 Single-Tasking Challenge: Walking
My Personal Score: 5/10
I tried to listen to the bright young minds of TikTok, selflessly sharing the benefits of “silent walking”. The problem is (and was), finding time to walk completely alone & free from distractions.
I give myself a 5/10 because while I did reduce music/podcasting during walks, I rarely got out alone this week. Most of my walking was multitasking - walking the baby (+ dog), pacing during work calls, or catching up with friends and family. None of those walks contributed to a more focused mind as my attention was constantly divided.
Moving forward: I’ll have to strike a balance between meaningful multitasking (i.e. precious time spent talking with others) and leaving room for clarity and insight. It may mean a short solo morning or after-lunch walk, or reducing distractions in other areas like mindless chores.
Next week’s challenge
The BIG one. TABS.
Single Tasking Challenge, Week 3: Work - Working one tab, application, and task at a time.
I hope some of you take this on as well and comment with your stories!

Q: What have you been obsessed with this year?
Wait for an answer.
You’ll be surprised by what you receive. I ask this because I want to know what people are spending an inordinate amount of time on. What they feel passionate about. And what they have expertise in. You’ll either learn something new or find a shared interest that you didn’t know existed.
